I strapped a tank to my back
\nand dropped backwards
\noff the side of Andy\u2019s

I hung in the icy murk for an hour,
\noverturning rocks
\nrolling sea cucumbers
\nbothering lobsters.<\/p>\n
Before my air ran out
\nshe floated into view
\nwide eyed and calm like an old black Lab.<\/p>\n
Seeing a seal underwater
\nwas what I\u2019d wanted
\nthough I hadn\u2019t known this.<\/p>\n
Ghostly slow she mooned at me,
\nnot swimming off. I got closer,
\nready for her to jet away,
\nbut she stayed.
\nI was thinking:
\nsomeone needs to see this.
\nI got nearer and nearer
\nuntil I touched her\u2014
\nmy neoprene mitts on her velvet skin.
\nI hugged that seal.
\nShe just stared at me
\nwith those unblinking eyes
\nstill expecting me not to believe
\nshe was real.<\/p>\n
